Anyone can show up to a room and talk about their own lives. It is something different to enter into a relationship. This is how I view therapy more than anything else, a relationship. Yes, there will be lots of learning. Yes, there will be questions and exploring of thoughts and emotions and taking responsibility for past behavior. But all this takes place in the ebb and flow, even moment-to-moment, unfolding of the relationship between therapist and client. This is an irreplaceable agent of change.

Starting therapy is a big step. You may be thinking, What about confidentiality? Your privacy is of utmost importance to me. It is my professional and ethical duty to maintain confidentiality. Yet there are certain instances when I must break confidentiality:
1) Intent to harm self or others
2) Child or suspected child abuse
3) Elder abuse
4) Dependent/vulnerable adult abuse
5) Mandated by court of law
